Jean-Michel Veillon & Yvon Riou
Music Under The Mountains are delighted to welcome two giants of Breton Music to Hollywood for an intimate performance in St. Kevins Church of Ireland, Jean-Michel Veillon & Yvon Riou.
Born on the north coast of Brittany, Jean-Michel Veillon was first a dancer and then a bombard* player in his teens. He then started to play the transverse wooden flute, getting his first influences from various Irish flute players, but then created distinct articulation techniques, more adapted to the Breton music.
Jean-Michel toured Europe and the U.S extensively from the 1980’s until today as a founder member of the highly praised KORNOG, PENNOU SKOULM, DEN, BARZAZ, TOUD’SAMES, Alain GENTY Group, Dan AR BRAZ & Heritage des Celtes, Jacques PELLEN & Celtic Procession (jazz and trad fusion), and recently toured with the prestigious tabla player ZAKIR HUSSAIN, recording a live CD (« Distant Kin ») at the San Francisco Jazz Center together with Indian, Scottish and Irish musicians.
Widely credited with introducing the simple system wooden flute into Breton folk music and primarly responsible, through his intensive teaching efforts and hundreds of concerts and festivals appearances, for its enthusiastic adoption among many dozens of young musicians throughout Brittany, Jean-Michel has achieved widespread recognition as one of world’s premier traditional flute players.
[* Bombard : old type of very loud double reed oboe, almost an emblem of Brittany]
Yvon Riou, guitar player from the coast of Tregor*, started with playing the open tuning (dadgad type), popularized in Brittany by guitarists like Soïg SIBÉRIL and Gilles LE BIGOT. He later developed his own very personal style of accompaniment, both sensitive and energetic, which makes him sound like no other.
Yvon played with the breton bands SKOLVAN & PENNOÙ SKOULM and accompanied on several occasions famous Irish musicians like Brid HARPER or the trio Paul BRADLEY, Ger FITZGERALD & Joe Mc KENNA. He was also part of the Brian Mc COMBE band with the Brittany-based bodhrán player and percussionist David « Hopi » HOPKINS, touring several times all over France and Poland.
[*Tregor : beautiful part of northern Brittany, cuturally very rich and dynamic]
Created in 1993, the duo Veillon-Riou was the first flute and guitar duo dedicated to Breton music, playing in innumerable festoù-noz* in Brittany, but also in concert with a repertoire extending to Irish & Scottish music and beyond. Jean-Michel & Yvon have toured extensively in Ireland (recording a live album – « Beo » – at the Culturlann McAdam O Fiaich in Belfast) but also played in Poland, Italy, England, USA and Canada). Their new album « Deus an Aod d’ar Menez » just came out in march 2017.
[Festoù-noz *(night-fests) : dance-evenings very popular all over Brittany]

Venue: St. Kevins Church of Ireland, Hollywood Co. Wicklow

Michelle O’Brien & Damien Mullane
The wonderful Michelle O’Brien (Fiddle) returns to Hollywood for the second concert of Music Under The Mountains 2017, Michelle has previously performed on several occassions in the village, aswell as facilitating fiddle masterclasses with students of the Laura Greaves Music Bursary. Michelles recordings include an album with concertina player Aogan Lynch and guitarist Gavin Ralston and later an album with the band Providence. In 2013 she recorded a duet album with the harpist Laoise Kelly entitled “The Wishing Well”, which was hailed as a must have.
Michelle will be joined on the night by Damien Mullane (Accordion). In a short space of time Damien has a built up musical CV that any veteran musician would be proud of. Damien has won numerous All-Ireland titles on both accordion and melodeon and began his professional career as the accordionist in the legendary Frankie Gavin’s band De Dannan. In 2012 Damien released his debut album ‘13’, on which he collaboration with some of Ireland’s leading exponents such as Donogh Hennessy, Zoe Conway, John Joe Kelly, Trevor Hutchinson, Dessie Kelliher, Pauline Scanlon and Éamonn de Barra.
Also joining Michelle and Damien will be Toss The Fiddles, a local trio of musicians featuring Aoife Doyle, Orla Greaves & Rachel Conlon.
We hope you will join us for this spectacular night of music in St. Kevin’s Church of Ireland on Friday September 22nd. Tickets are available at musicunderthemountains.com.
Michelle and Damien will also be facilitating workshops in St Kevin’s Community Centre on Saturday September 23rd at 10.30 am. The cost of the workshops is €10, for further details just contact us!
Kevin Conneff, Tim Edey & Gay McKeon
The penultimate concert of this years festival features three giants of traditional music sharing the stage, these men could each perform a concert alone outright, so we are in for a right treat with the three of them together!
Kevin Conneff is the bodhrán player and vocalist with The Chieftains and has been since 1976. Apart from his work with The Chieftains, he often works with other musicians in duos or trios. He also does solo gigs and workshops at home and abroad.
Tim Edey, BBC R2 Best musician of 2012, is born across the water in Co. Kent. Tim is both a successful solo and session artist with his recent album “Sailing Over the 7th String” produced by none other than Robin Wynn Evans (producer to The Manic street preachers). Tim’s CV is like a who’s who of Irish music – Christy Moore, The Chieftains, Mary Black, Altan, Begley & Cooney and Sharon Shannon to name a few.
Gay McKeon took an interest in uilleann piping in the 1960s under the tutelage of piper and pipe-maker Leo Rowsome at the Piper’s Club on Thomas Street in Dublin’s city centre. Leo had a profound influence on Gay’s playing as did the other musicians who taught at and visited the Club. After Leo Rowsome’s death in 1970, Gay sourced much of his repertoire from published collections.
Since the mid 1970s Gay has toured and recorded extensively with artists including Christy Moore, Maddy Prior and June Tabor and has featured on many albums including The Drones and Chanters Volume 2 and The Piper’s Rock, as well as a solo album Irish Piping Tradition, and a trio CD The Dusty Miller with his two sons Conor and Seán. Gay has performed on three volumes of the tutor series The Art of Uilleann Piping and produced and directed publications including the Piper’s Choice DVD series and numerous CD recordings published by Na Píobairí Uilleann. Gay has been teaching piping nationally and internationally on a continuous basis for over forty years.
Joining Kevin, Tim and Gay on the night will be Feidhlim and Muireann Robinson, two wonderfully talented local musicians who will open up the evening for us!
And if the prospect of this gig isn’t enough we are delighted to say that both Kevin and Gay will be giving workshops in the Hollywood centre on the morning of September 23rd! Workshops are priced at €10, superb value for the caliber of musician you will be learning from! Non players are also welcome to attend and watch the workshops, depending on demand and space. Worshops will begin at 10.30am and run until 12.30pm. Further information on the workshops can be obtained by dropping us a message.
Again this is not a concert to miss! Tickets are on sale at musicunderthemountains.com.

I Draw Slow return to Music Under The Mountains
After their spectacular performance last year, we had to ask the guys to come back and so Music Under The Mountains is delighted to welcome I Draw Slow back to Hollywood! Following on from the release of their latest album, Turn Your Face To The Sun, I Draw Slow have had quite the busy summer touring all over the US and Ireland. The album itself has been subject to rave reviews from both sides of the Atlantic.
“Impressive roots, delivered with gusto and flair” – The Irish Times
“A group blending historically Irish storytelling with full Americana rhythms. Their newest album, Turn Your Face To The Sun, finds the band further developing their rich, one-of-a-kind sound…” – Elmore Magazine
“Whatever Americana scene there may be in Ireland, I Draw Slow have surely conquered it.” – The Sunday Times
This years concert will be particularly special as they will perform acoustically in St. Kevin’s Church in Hollywood, those of you who have been at such concerts in the church know that this will be something unmissable.
As is expected tickets are already selling fast! So book your tickets sooner rather than later at musicunderthemountains.com.
